Statement Regarding the Washington Supreme Court's August 6, 2026 Order

The Washington Supreme Court issued an order today addressing applicants affected by the cancellation of the July 2026 administration of the NextGen Uniform Bar Examination (NextGen UBE) in Yakima. The order establishes a path forward for affected applicants.

We recognize how difficult the events surrounding the July administration have been for the affected applicants. Preparing for the bar examination requires significant time, effort, and sacrifice. Applicants spend years working toward this moment, and we understand the disruption, uncertainty, and disappointment they experienced. We are sorry that applicants who prepared and studied for the exam did not have the opportunity to take it.

NCBE respects the decisions reflected in the order issued by the Washington Supreme Court today and remains committed to supporting the Washington State Bar Association as preparations continue for the September 2026 make-up administration.

As we continue working with Washington to better understand the circumstances surrounding the disruptions at the Yakima Convention Center, we remain committed to working alongside our jurisdiction partners to apply the lessons learned from this experience, strengthen recommendations and guidance for future administrations, and continue earning the trust placed in us by candidates, jurisdictions, and the public. We are committed to conducting a full investigation of the issues that resulted in the cancellation.

The Washington Supreme Court and the Washington State Bar Association have authority over admissions decisions in Washington, including decisions regarding waiver eligibility and the eligibility of particular categories of applicants.
